Trailer: Under the Skin

The first trailer for Scarlett Johanssen's new film Under the Skin has hit the web and (AV quality issues aside) it looks intriguing and positively mind-blowing, though I'm hard-pressed to tell what the heck is going on. This arty, ambitious sci-fi flick, directed by Jonathan Glazer (his first film since 2004's Birth), has already generated a lot of talk and divided critics since its screenings at Telluride and Venice Film Festivals. The Guardian calls it an "extraordinary malarial dream"; The Telegraph says "astonishing"; Variety didn't show as much love, describe it as an "ultimately torpid and silly tale of an alien on the prowl". Me? I'm sold.

Trailer: Beyond the Black Rainbow

January 10th will see the release of Panos Cosmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow from Madman, and  it's without the doubt the weirdest, trippiest film you'll see that month. I've already done a rave in my review, so let's put some pictures to words now with this trailer: If you remotely have a taste for unusual, dreamlike cinema, you'll find much to enjoy/admire here (and if you don't, it won't be the easiest 90 minutes you'll sit through lol).

While everyone's currently busy live-blogging the Golden Globes, I've only got time at the moment to marvel at these two things: (1) a VHS toaster and (2) a clip from the live-action Filipino version of He-Man: Masters of the Universe...

Random Stuff #21: Deafula

Not sure what to say about this one except that sometimes you trawl the internet you come across some incredibly odd stuff and this is one of those times. Here's a wee clip from Deafula, apparently the only sign-language movie ever made (American sign language to be precise). I need to see this.

Female Ninja Magic

Sometimes when you have nothing to blog about, no inspiration, no motivation, all you need is a bizarre Japanese video featuring ninjas and vagina bubbles to get you back into swing of things... WARNING: possibly not safe for work, and definitely not for kids, but there is no nudity or anything, just pure out-of-context random strangeness.

Greatest Action Scene of All Time!

Why don't have Hollywood movies have action scenes this utterly berserk? Oh that's right- they have laws protecting their horses...

Ghanian Handmade Poster Weirdness

If you're as sick as I am of the Floating Head-style design of today's movie posters, feast your eyes on these handmade posters from Ghana! Utterly incredible, warped, beautiful, BIZARRE... it's hard to pick a favourite from those examples, but I might have to go with Cujo and John Woo's The Killer. Words fail. I'd happily hang them on my living room wall. Like all great outsider/folk art, they're charming and sincere in their primitivism. You can see more here.
