What Happened to Movie Posters?

Ever wonder why today's movie posters all seem so samey and uninspired? It's because they ARE. Here's a great little video breaking down the design trends and elements (floating giant heads!) that pop up time and time again, and compares them to the more visually exciting and imaginative posters of yesteryear:

The Girl with the Pirated DVD-R

Sony's DVD release of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has confused some Redbox customers in the States due to the "pirated look" of the disc:

While I appreciate this from a design perspective, it's interesting and curious that a major studio would want to associate their product with piracy at all, even if it's in the spirit of the movie's rebellious, computer-hacking protagonist. Not sure if the NZ release will have the same design, but if it does, just so you know here first: we're not sending out pirated discs of the movie.
