The 2014 Golden Globes... in GIFs

The great thing about Tumblr and awards shows: if you don't have the attention span to sit through three hours of cringey Hollywood back-patting, the gif-making wizards of Tumblr will capture the best, most essential moments for you. Here's a selection from the 2014 Golden Globes:
Check out the full list of winners here (our Awards section is slightly bung at the mo, it's on the list of things to fix soon).

The Tree of Life Wins Palme D'Or

Terrence Malick's long-gestating The Tree of Life has won the prestigious Palme D'Or at Cannes. By all accounts a mind-blowingly cosmic, if expectedly divisive work, the film combines dinosaurs, planets and period family drama into something that definitely should probably be experienced on the biggest screen possible. It hasn't been confirmed yet for the NZFF, but I can't see how it won't play - it has to!! An excellent round-up of critical reactions can be found here, and feast your eyes on the trailer:

Yet with all the anticipation and hype around The Tree of Life, I'm finding myself more excited about Nicolas Winding Refn's actioner Drive, starring Ryan Gosling as a getaway driver for the mob. Check out Mike D'Angelo's rave report ("pure genre bliss"), and this sneak peek:

Golden Moments

If you missed the 2011 Golden Globes, here's a collection of amusing highlights that made it one of the more memorable movie awards ceremonies in a while.

Ricky Gervais' now-legendary opening speech where he went beyond merely "poking fun" to actually pissing a few people off. (There was some chatter this morning that he was "banned" from any future hosting of the Globes, but he insists he hasn't been.)

Robert Downey, Jr. coming back with a fair swipe at Gervais at the start of his presentation:

Drunk-off-her-face Enter the Void star Paz de la Huerta denied entry to the after party, falling, her boob poppin' out, and a fan seeking an autograph:

Natalie Portman's crazy laugh:

Cancer-free but creepy Michael Douglas photo-bombing Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angelina Jolie:

Christian Bale being Christian Bale:

The Post-Oscars Thing

Between busily adding movies to the site and watching a live web stream of the Oscars yesterday afternoon (and also tweeting), I didn't really get a complete feel for how it all went down, but it seems like the general consensus is that it was another ho-hum year, even though it was reportedly the most watched Oscars in five years. One surprising, perfectly cringey and awkward moment is worth mentioning - it's been called "Kanye moment" of the Oscars: during the Best Documentary Short award - which went to Music By Prudence - director-producer Roger Ross Williams was ambushed on stage by producer Elinor Burkett, who went on to hog the microphone for the rest of the acceptance speech. Watch the video below and then head over to Salon to read an interview with the filmmakers about what happened:
